This is the quiet western approach, with far fewer people than the Yongmunsa side. From Sanasa you pass the well and wall stones of the old Hamwang fortress, then climb a gentle forest path to a saddle on the south-west ridge. From there to the 966 m summit of Hamwangbong the rock increases. Allow more time than the Yongmunsa routes, and start early when days are short.
