Yongmunsan hike info
Yongmunsan is the highest mountain in Yangpyeong. Its summit, Gaseopbong, stands at 1,157 m, making it the tallest peak in Gyeonggi south of the Han River, an hour or so east of Seoul. People once called it the Geumgangsan of Gyeonggi, for its dense rock ridges and valleys. A ginkgo said to be over a thousand years old stands at the entrance, and many hikers look up at the tree before they look at the trail.
In autumn the whole tree turns yellow. In late October to early November there are a few days when the leaves drop all at once and cover the temple yard like a yellow quilt. After a photo under the tree, the valley path leads up to Madang Rock, a broad slab big enough for a picnic, which is exactly how it is used. A legend says the mountain was renamed from Miji-san to Yongmunsan when Yi Seong-gye took the throne.
The summit itself is taken up by broadcast and military installations, so it is not an open lookout. Access varies by year, so ask Yangpyeong county or the tourist complex before you go. Even so, the layered ridges seen from the trail make many people come back.
