Unmunsan hike info

Unmunsan means Cloud Gate, and the name fits. At 1,195 m on the border of Cheongdo and Miryang, it is the second-highest peak of the Yeongnam Alps after Gajisan. The south face drops steeply while the north side runs long and gentle. From the top, the ridges of Eoksan, Gajisan and Munbokssan stack up in layers, and on a cloudy day the villages below vanish under white.

There are two main ways up. From Seokgolsa in Miryang you follow a boulder-strewn stream and climb to the ridge near Sangunam hermitage. From Samyang you grind up to Araetjae for a rest, then face the last 1.5 km on ropes and steps. It is a long climb, not a casual stroll. In return you get scattered azaleas on the ridge in spring and silvergrass with maples in autumn.

On the north foot sit Unmunsa, a nuns' temple, and Unmunsan Natural Recreation Forest. Trails from that side have been closed at times, so check before you plan to start there.
