Unjangsan hike info
Unjangsan is really three peaks: Chilseongdae to the west, Unjangdae in the middle and Samjangbong to the east, all within about ten metres of each other at 1,100 m and change. Walking the ridge between them takes under an hour. It is high for the Honam region, yet far quieter than Seoraksan or Jirisan, and on weekdays you can walk the crest without meeting another group.
From a distance the mountain looks round and gentle under thick forest. Up close it is not. The climb from Piamokjae to the west summit is steady uphill with a roped rock section and loose gravel underfoot. The reward comes on the ridge, where the views open all round. From Chilseongdae the forest roads and highways wind below like lines on a map, and the Unilam-Banilam gorge cuts into the land to the east.
That gorge to the northeast is named for its cliffs, which let in only half a day of sunlight. In summer people come after the hike to soak their feet. In autumn colour moves down from the ridge, and in winter the crest turns quietly white with rime. Public transport is thin, so this is a mountain for people with a car.
