Taehwasan hike info
Taehwasan rises to 1,027 m where Yeongwol in Gangwon meets Danyang in North Chungcheong. It is not a spiky mountain. The ridge rolls on in long round shoulders, with rocky ledges here and there that look down into the Yeongwol valleys, and a river curls around the foot of the slope.
The usual start is at the gate of the power plant on the Yeongwol side. About a hundred metres along the road toward Gossi Cave you reach a trail sign, then cross the bridges into the stream valley. After roughly an hour you come to a temple site, which is also the old Taehwasan fortress. A viewpoint sits about 200 m further up to the left, and from there the ridge leads past a helipad and a lookout to the summit.
Azaleas line the ridge in spring and the leaves turn in autumn. The path is gentle, so families walk it often. Many people finish by visiting Gossi Cave nearby and call it a day.
