Sobaeksan hike info
At 1,439.7 m Sobaeksan is lower than Seoraksan or Jirisan, but nobody on Birobong, the summit, is thinking about height. Trees give up well below the ridge, and grass lies along it like a horse's mane while the wind visibly combs through. At the end of spring the same ridge turns pale pink with royal azaleas, and the stretch from Yeonhwabong over Birobong to Gukmangbong is where the photos come from.
In winter it is another mountain. The old yew trees near the summit freeze into white rime, and snow blows sideways along the crest. It is much colder than at the trailhead and the wind makes it worse, which is why the mountain is known for snow-flower hikes.
Trailheads sit on both sides of the border: Punggi and Yeongju in Gyeongbuk, Danyang in Chungbuk. From Cheondong in Danyang you climb beside a stream. Eouigok is the shortest line, popular with people who just want the summit. The Jungnyeong route starts on a paved road and runs a long ridge to the observatory on Yeonhwabong. Afterwards Punggi offers ginseng shops and local makgeolli, and Danyang offers garlic dishes.
