Sinbulsan hike info

Sinbulsan is a big peak of the Yeongnam Alps, straddling the Ulsan and Yangsan border. It stands 1,159 m, but the face of the mountain belongs to the Sinbul plateau beside the summit. There are almost no trees on the ridge and the silver grass climbs to knee height, so when the wind blows the whole mountainside leans one way. From Ganwoljae in autumn people say it looks like a highland abroad.

From the Deungeok hot-spring side you pass Hongnyu Falls, and the Kalbawi ridge begins. The steep path starts just left of the falls, and once you are on the ridge the rock teeth open onto Ganwolsan and Ganwoljae in one view. If you only want the grass, you can take the gentle path up to Ganwoljae, rest, and come back. Spring brings azaleas and fresh green, and winter lays snow across the plateau.

The traverse from the summit over Sinbuljae toward Yeongchuksan and Tongdosa fills a whole day. Whichever way you go, nothing on the ridge breaks the wind, so dress for 5-10 C colder than the trailhead.
