Seonunsan hike info

Seonunsan tops out at 334.7 m, which sounds more like a neighbourhood hill than a mountain. Walk in, though, and cliffs and rock heads line up behind Seonunsa temple while a stream runs up the valley to Dosolam hermitage. Because the rock is bare, the ridges open onto the farmland and the west coast plain.

The hill changes face with the calendar. In late March and early April the camellia grove behind the temple turns red. In mid-September red spider lilies line the road in front of it, and in early November the colour moves along the Dosol stream. The camellia grove and a huge old pine are protected natural monuments, and both sit close to the temple.

Two kinds of walk start here. One follows the stream gently up to Dosolam. The other climbs the rocky ridge toward Nakjodae and Cheonmabong. Many people time it for sunset at Nakjodae, with the sun dropping into the Yellow Sea. Temple and ridge fit into one day.
