Namsan (Gyeongju) hike info
Namsan is only 495 m, a back-garden hill by height. But you keep stopping. A Buddha is carved into a streamside boulder, a headless statue sits at the end of a ridge, a pagoda stands out of the grass. Along about 8 km of ridge, roughly 80 Buddhas, 60 pagodas and 100 temple sites are scattered. The people of Silla treated the whole mountain as one temple.
The north peak is Geumobong (468 m) and the south peak Gowibong (495 m). Most people start from Samneung in Bae-dong. The path runs through pines, and carved Buddhas appear right beside it. Views from the top are mostly blocked by trees, so the pleasure here is in what you pass, not what you see. Azaleas spread through the pines in spring and the leaves stay red into early November.
The routes split into three: Samneung, the Yongjang valley, and the Chilbulam and Tapgol side. The most common outing climbs from Samneung and drops into the Yongjang valley. The trails are gentle enough for children, but the rock ridges are slick after rain.
