Juwangsan hike info
Juwangsan wins on rock, not height. The main peak is 722 m, but what stays with you are the grey cliff walls standing behind Daejeonsa temple like a folding screen, with three waterfalls dropping one after another along the narrow gorge. Legend says the exiled Chinese prince Juwang hid in a cave here, so crags and lookouts carry names from that story.
Autumn is the season. The gorge is reddest from late October into early November, and the car parks fill early with people trying to frame the temple, the cliffs and the maples together. Spring wraps the walls in new green, and in midsummer the sound of the stream makes the valley feel cooler than the plain.
There are three basic routes: a flat stroll up the gorge to the falls, a loop up to the main peak and back along the ridge, and a long walk in from Jeolgol on the far side over Gamebong (882 m). The Gamebong side runs on a booking system, so check before you go. Jusanji, the pond where willows stand in the water, lies apart from the main mountain and is a separate drive.
