Juheulsan hike info

Juheulsan stands directly above Mungyeong Saejae on the Sobaek range. At 1,108 m it is no giant, and the pleasure is in the approach. You walk onto the old Saejae road, turn uphill near the first gate, and the sound of a stream and the forest stay with you for a long stretch. Near the top the rock opens up, and the town of Mungyeong and the fields toward Maseong spread out below.

Hyeguksa temple sits halfway up the main route. It is said to date from the Silla era, and standing in its yard feels like standing in the middle of the forest. Higher up is Daegwolteo, the spot where King Gongmin of Goryeo is said to have taken shelter. Azaleas fill the sides of the path in spring and maple colour fills the valley in autumn. In midsummer the waterfall side is cool and easy to walk.

Most of the way is packed dirt, kind to the feet, but the summit area is bare rock and slick after rain. You can come down the way you went up, or loop back through the Jogok valley and walk out along the Saejae road. Because you start from the Saejae car park, it is easy to add the old gates and the road afterwards.
