Jangansan hike info

Jangansan rises 1,237 m in the middle of Jangsu County. It sounds big and climbs gently: the Muryong Pass car park already sits near 900 m, so the climb to the top is only about 300 m, and the silvergrass field is a 45-minute walk. The summit is rounded rather than sharp, so the whole ridge looks like one long meadow.

Autumn is its season. By mid-October the ridge is full of silvergrass, and each gust lays the silver plumes over in one direction. From the first viewpoint the ridges toward Jirisan's Cheonwangbong stack up in the distance, and a little higher you can pick out Deogyusan and Baegunsan. The crest is also a watershed: rain on one side runs to the Geum River and the west coast, on the other to the Seomjin River and the south coast.

There are several routes. The Muryong Pass trail, the one most people take, is a half-day outing. With more time, the loop from Goemok village in Gyenam, coming down by Jangansa and the valley, goes deeper. In summer many people come just for the water at Deoksan Valley below.
