Hwangseoksan hike info
Hwangseoksan is a 1,192 m rock peak between Seoha and Anui in Hamyang, Gyeongnam. The summit splits into two rocky heads. The south peak is pointed like a pyramid, with a top so small that two or three people barely fit. The north peak is closed to unequipped climbers, so you take a bypass. The rock spine is rough and fitted with ropes, so your hands are busy all the way up.
Below the ridge runs Hwangseoksanseong, a valley-enclosing fortress where a major battle took place in 1597 during the Jeongyu invasion. A cliff called Pibawi carries the story of women who jumped when the wall fell. Higher up, a pine grows right out of the stones by the old gate.
In autumn the ridge toward Geomangsan fills with silver grass. From the top you see the north peak, the Hamyang plain and the Geomangsan, Gibaeksan and Geumwonsan ridges, and on clear days Deogyusan and Jirisan beyond. The long climb and the rock sections make it a real workout, not a stroll.
