Hwangmaesan hike info
Hwangmaesan sits where Hapcheon and Sancheong meet in Gyeongnam. The summit is 1,113 m, yet a road climbs to a car park at roughly 800-900 m, so the view arrives before your boots are laced. A short walk up and soft grassy ridges roll away in every direction. The plateau below the top turns pink with royal azaleas in early to mid May and silver with silvergrass in October.
Mosanjae, to the south, is the same mountain with another face. Granite crags line up above the Yeongamsa temple site, with Dotdaebawi rock and Buddha-shaped boulders cutting the skyline. Iron stairs and bare rock make it busier on the feet than the plateau side. Follow the ridge on and the rock suddenly gives way to the open azalea fields.
On the Sancheong side there is a film-set park, and at the southern foot in Gahoe lie the remains of Yeongamsa, known for its twin-lion stone lantern. On azalea and silvergrass weekends traffic backs up, so go early or take the shuttle. The top is windy and runs 5-10 C colder than the lowlands.
