You drive up to the car park at Unsuam, a branch hermitage of Jikjisa, and start there. That skips the 2 km walk from the temple yard, so the summit and back is about 6 km and two and a half hours. The woods start right away and the top is flat, which suits a day when you want Hwangaksan done by lunch.
