Gyeryongsan hike info
Gyeryongsan is only 846 m, but it has a shape of its own. The name means Chicken Dragon: a crested dragon lying down. The Jayeonseong ridge between Sambulbong and Gwaneumbong is a rock path with drops on both sides. A national park reachable by bus from Daejeon, its Donghaksa valley fills up on weekends.
Three temples hold the mountain between them: Donghaksa on the east, Gapsa on the west, Sinwonsa on the south. Above Donghaksa stand the Nammae pagodas, tied to a monk and his sister's legend. Sinwonsa keeps Jungakdan, where the mountain spirit was honoured in the Joseon era. The highest point, Cheonhwangbong, sits inside a military site and is closed to walkers, so people treat Sambulbong and Gwaneumbong as the summits.
Autumn is the busiest season. The avenue of trees into Gapsa turns red in late October, a few days after the Donghaksa valley. In winter the ridge ices over and the Jayeonseong stretch gets slippery. Expect the ridge to feel 5-8 C colder than the car park.
