Gitdaebong hike info

Gitdaebong is the highest point on Hongdo at 367.8 m (some maps say 378 m). Because you start at sea level the climb feels bigger than the number. Wooden stairs begin right behind Hongdo's main village, where the ferry lands, and after about 20 minutes the harbour, the beach and the neighbouring Yangsanbong all open up below. The path is boardwalk and steps, with rest spots along the way.

The whole island is a natural monument and part of Dadohaehaesang National Park. You climb through thick camellia and machilus forest to the top. From the summit you look down on a second settlement, Hongdo's village no. 2 on the far side. The two villages are linked only by boat and by the mountain path.

Nobody comes to Hongdo just for the hike. Most visitors take a boat tour around the sea stacks and the Namumun rock arch, then climb the mountain in the late light. The ferry timetable runs the day, so check your return boat before you set off.
