Geumsan (Namhae) hike info

Geumsan is only about 705 m, but nobody here measures it by height. The whole hill is bare rock, every outcrop has a name, and wherever you turn your head the South Sea and its islands hang in the frame. It is the one mountain inside Hallyeo Maritime National Park.

The rock turns into doors along the path. At Ssanghongmun two round holes pierce a boulder, and stepping inside frames the sea like a picture. Boriam hermitage clings to a cliff with a steady stream of people coming to pray. Around sunrise they line up in the courtyard facing the water. From the summit tower the islands lie below your feet.

A road climbs most of the way to Boriam, so many people only do a short walk. On foot, the classic line starts at the Sangju-side visitor center and climbs through Ssanghongmun. Either way there are many rock steps, and on windy days you can feel it near the top.
