Deokhangsan hike info
Deokhangsan is a 1,072.9 m peak on the Baekdudaegan spine between Samcheok and Taebaek. What makes it memorable is what lies underneath: limestone has been dissolved into a string of caves, and the area is protected as the Daei cave zone. Hwanseongul, about 1.6 km long, is the best known.
The hike splits two ways. From Golmal on the Samcheok side, a loop over Hwanseonbong and the summit fills a day. From Hasami on the Taebaek side, a shorter, gentler path crosses Gubusiryeong and suits beginners. The summit itself is a modest wooded top with limited views, but stepping onto the ridge gives a deep look down the Daei valley.
People come to cool off in the cave in summer and for ridge colour in autumn. In spring and late autumn the mountain is often closed for fire prevention, so check dates first.
