Chilgapsan hike info

Chilgapsan is only 559.7 m, but from the top you see nothing except mountains. There are no sharp rock spires here. Round, forested ridges overlap like waves with villages folded in between, which is how it earned the nickname Chungnam's Alps.

Janggoksa temple sits at a slant in a stream valley below, and in autumn the maples come down right to its yard. The temple trail climbs through it to the summit. On the far side, a 207 m suspension bridge crosses Cheonjangho lake, and a trail runs from there to the top as well. If you know the old pop song Chilgapsan, you will find its memorial near the totem park.

No climb is long. Any route reaches the top in two or three hours. The summit itself is wooded with limited views, so the ridge walk is the point. Near Hanti Pass there is an observatory, which turns a day hike into a hike-then-stargaze plan.
