Chiaksan hike info
Chiaksan walls off Wonju to the east. Its summit, Birobong, is officially 1,282 m, and the forest is thick enough that tree shade stays in the memory more than any rock spire.
The busiest route starts from Guryongsa on the north side. A forest road and stream lead gently to Seryeom Falls, then a long staircase climb begins on Sadari-byeongchang. The southern route from Hwanggol passes Ipseoksa and is quieter. Joined together, the two make a full-day traverse.
In mid-October the Guryongsa valley turns red, and car parks fill early on weekends. The summit is cooler than the plains, so carry a windbreaker and keep to entry hours (4am-2pm in summer, 5am-1pm in winter).
