Cheonseongsan hike info

Cheonseongsan is a 920 m mountain in Yangsan, and what greets you up top is a meadow rather than bare rock. Near the summit a broad plain of silver grass called Hwaeombeol opens out, dotted with small wetlands. On a clear day you can see both the East Sea and the South Sea, which is why many people come for the first sunrise of the year.

The name comes from the monk Wonhyo. Legend says a thousand monks heard him lecture on the Avatamsaka Sutra here and all awakened. Temples said to be his, Naewonsa, Hongnyongsa and Wonhyoam, sit along the foot of the mountain. Beside Hongnyongsa a three-step waterfall throws spray the day after rain.

In autumn the grass turns silver; in spring azaleas colour the ridge. The summit ridge has little up and down, so it stays fairly easy in winter, but a windbreaker belongs in the pack year-round.
