Cheongwansan hike info

Cheongwansan rises abruptly from the Jangheung coast at 724 m. It is not tall, but the rock never lets up on the way to the top. Stone pillars and crags line every ridge, and from afar the peaks look like brushes stood on end. From Yeondaebong the south coast and its islands spread out below, and on a clear day Hallasan floats faintly above the horizon.

In autumn the crest turns to silver grass. The path from Hwanhuidae to Yeondaebong ripples like water, and when the sun drops the tips go gold. Walkers time their climb for this. Down in the Jangcheon valley, old scholars carved characters into the rocks, and you find yourself stopping in front of them.

There are two ways in. On the Gwansan side, the Jangcheonjae trail follows the valley up. On the Daedeok side, from the Literature Park, a path lined with small stone towers climbs past Tapsansa temple to the ridge. The two meet on the crest, so you can go up one and come down the other.
