Bangjangsan hike info
Bangjangsan sits where Jangseong in Jeonnam meets Gochang and Jeongeup in Jeonbuk. Its name is borrowed from a Chinese legend of sacred mountains, and locals ranked it with Jirisan and Mudeungsan as Honam's three holy peaks. At the low 740s of metres it is not tall, but the ridge is long and open on one side, and on a clear day you can see the West Sea faintly past the Gochang plain.
The old name is Bangdeungsan. A folk song said to come from here tells of a woman carried off by bandits who sang her resentment at a husband who never came. Today the easiest outing starts at the recreation forest halfway up and loops past Eoksaebong and Byeogobong. Eoksaebong has a paragliding launch, so on a windy day wings hang in the sky.
For a longer day, walk the 12 km ridge from Jangseong Galjae over Three Peaks, the beacon site and the summit, down to Gochang Pass. In autumn the silver grass lies down in the wind. Parts of the trail close in the spring and autumn fire-prevention periods, so check dates first.
