Baegunsan (Pocheon) hike info

At 903 m, Baegunsan is no giant, but it is close to the city and its ridge is open and clean. On the Idong side, Heungnyongsa temple and Baegun Valley run down the foot of the mountain, while across in Hwacheon the ridge carries on toward Gwangdeoksan. From the top you see layers of forested ridgeline rolling away between the trees.

In summer the valley draws people first. Below Heungnyongsa, water spreads over wide rock in Baegun Valley and families come to splash; hiking is for the ridge above. Autumn turns the ridge yellow and red, and in winter the snowy ridge path is quiet and good for walking.

Two routes are the usual choice. Starting from Gwangdeok Pass at over 600 m, the climb is only about 300 m, so the top comes easily; walking on over the summit and down to Heungnyongsa makes a half-day traverse. The summit is windy, so assume it runs 4-5 C colder than the lowlands.
