Baegunsan (Jeongseon) hike info
Baegunsan sits on the Jeongseon-Pyeongchang border and tops out at 883 m. The height is ordinary; the setting is not. The Dong River loops around the mountain in a U, so on the ridge the river keeps changing shape beneath your feet. The summit itself is wooded and closed in, and fog is common. The open views come on the Chiljokryeong side of the ridge instead.
Chiljokryeong carries a folk tale. A scholar who lacquered furniture had a dog that ran off with lacquer on its paws, and following the prints led people to a spot with the whole river laid out below. The name means roughly "seven-foot pass". The old trail, which linked Munhui village in Pyeongchang with Jejang village in Jeongseon, was designated a scenic site in 2021.
There are three main ways in. From the Baengnyong Cave car park at Munhui, in Pyeongchang, the climb is the gentlest. The Jeomjae side in Jeongseon is short but runs along a rock ridge with cliffs beside it, and it is not for beginners. The Yeonpo route passes the Haneulbyeok suspension bridge on its way to Chiljokryeong. After rain or with snow on the ground the rock gets slippery.
